Maison & Objet Paris 2019: EXPORMIM, the force of tradition
Trends come and go, tastes and lifestyles change, and the designs are renewed incessantly, but at EXPORMIM there is one thing that is passed over generations: the high quality of its products, which reflects the great craftsmanship and finishing that go into them.
A family-run business, already in its third generation, EXPORMIM started life in 1960 manufacturing wicker products, as the conflation of its name indicates – “exportadora”, meaning exporter, and “mimbre”, which is wicker-. Since then, the company has evolved shifting towards the production of furniture, both for indoor and outdoor use, which is sold in over 40 countries and is included in more and more contract projects, such as luxury hotels and restaurants, chic cafés and gastropubs and exclusive public and private events.
The perfect blending of tradition and innovation is nowadays at the core of their business allowing the creation of beautifully hand-crafted products that fit in all contemporary spaces and always without losing a hint of authenticity.
The enhancement of rattan and the development of highly technical outdoor collections in cooperation with renowned architects and designers – Oscar Tusquets Blanca, Benedetta Tagliabue, Jaime Hayon, Manel Molina, Lievore Altherr Molina or Mario Ruiz – are largely responsible for the increasing success of the brand. Their catalogue includes the iconic collections of the brand, such as the NAUTICA swing chair or the COQUETA chair, and the new additions like the successful FRAMES dining chair and armchair, most of them on display at the M&O 2019.

With FRAMES the company has added a new chapter to a story focused on great craftsmanship and tradition, showing how a clever design can take advantage of a different, more joyous approach to the material. This new design narrative allows to move traditional outdoor furniture indoors, adding a layer of glamour to the rustic charm of the material. That’s how the FRAMES chair and armchair, despite their simple yet sophisticated aesthetic, have assumed all the features of a contemporary classic.
The FRAMES chair and armchair have a structure made of peeled and tinted natural rattan. Seat and backrest are manufactured in tinted natural wicker (“octagonal wicker”) and legs can be finished in rattan.
Optional cushion with upholstery are available in: natural or faux leather, virgin wool fabrics, velvet and polypropylene.
GRES barstool. Miguel Milá
With its structure made of peeled and tinted natural rattan (26 mm/1.02” in diameter), the GRES barstool, created by Miguel Milá, is a reedition of a classic piece dating back to 1962. Its design, which challenges fashion trends and goes beyond the conventions of a specific era, reflects perfectly the particular design vision of the renowned Spanish industrial designer, who is known for the use of traditional techniques and its timeless classic creations.
Available in three different heights, GRES is finished with a three-step coating (dye, base coat and top coat) highly resistant to solar radiation thanks to the use of UV filters.
Multiple upholstery options are available: natural or faux leather, virgin wool fabrics, velvet and polypropylene. Protective caps with removable plastic-felt inserts.
HUMA dining armchair. Mario Ruiz
Starting from a basic version that integrates the use of flexible ribs in the backrest and upholstered seat, industrial designer Mario Ruiz has achieved to preserve the classic construction of rattan while providing the chair of ultimate comfort and a modern look. Other versions come with different solutions for both the backrest and the legs.
Backrest comes in natural rattan or steel tube covered with cold-cured moulded polyurethane foam and upholstery. Legs are available in rattan, wood or metal.
All versions include upholstered seat. Multiple upholstery options are available: natural or faux leather, virgin wool fabrics, velvet and polypropylene.
NAUTICA swing chair. MUT Design
Beautifully made, the NAUTICA hanging chair pays homage to one of the first pieces produced by EXPORMIM in the 1970’s, and despite its visual lightness, this chair is strong, resistant and built to last. The airy, swirling silhouette is a fresh take on the classic rattan swing chair, and it can be suspended from a tree branch, a sturdy beam or a stand.
The structure is made of peeled and tinted natural, finished with a three-step coating (dye, base coat and top coat) highly resistant to solar radiation, with metal swivel base or legs.

The cushions come upholstered in natural or faux leather, virgin wool fabrics, velvet and polypropylene.
KOTAI table. Mario Ruiz
Made of solid wood, the KOTAI table collection stays true to its name, which means sturdiness in Japanese. It comes in different sizes and shapes, rectangular, round and square, all of them made of solid European oaks.
But there are yet other intriguing features that they share and that constitute the hallmark of the collection and highlight the unique possibilities of this noble material: the cleavage that divides the tabletop into two halves, the fine beveled edges and the biased legs which help chairs fit smoothly and with natural elegance under the tabletop.
